Piazzetta San Marco

 Venice, Italy * May 15, 2009
The Piazzetta San Marco is the part of the Piazza which looks out onto the lagoon and the mouth of the Grand Canal. In the Piazzetta stands the two famous columns which honor Venice's patrons, Marco and Todaro. In the photo, the Doge's Palace can be seen on the left.

When I shoot in tourist locations, like Piazetta San Marco, I find that sometimes the most difficult condition to deal with is crowd control.  Not having a remote shutter release exacerbates the problem.  Without a remote shutter release I must use my two second timer for longer exposures, such as this one.  That means I try to predict how the crowds will move, two seconds from when I hit the shutter, and for the length of the exposure, one to three or more seconds.  That means to get one decent shot I end up shooting dozens more exposures than I would normally.  A tripod is a must in these situations.
